As far back as I could remember, I have been against the grain. Never quite fit in during grade school and don't really fit in the general population now. It took me like 10 years to buy my first pair of skinny jeans after they became 'the thing to have' and I still don't own a pair of crocks! Against the grain.
Despite my upbringing, I still joined the military. Found out the hard way how religious my family was when I came back home after 6 years and almost the entire family had disowned me. Ain't that a welcoming home present!? Against the grain.
I had a doctor tell me once, I would be on medication for the rest of my life. I looked at him like he had a "you know what" growing out of his forehead! Another one told me that if I received pain medicine I HAD to come back every month, even if I didn't need the medicine. Didn't look at him much better. One told me I needed back injections and possible surgery for plantar fasciitis when I insisted on a cure after 2 1/2 years of treatment. Needless to say, I didn't follow any of their treatment plans... Against the grain.
Years ago I healed myself in less than 6 months from many health conditions, in a nonconventional against the grain way of course. Doctor was completely astonished by my "optimal blood work". Having a very puzzled look on her face, she looked up wide-eyed and asked, "How in the world did you do this so quickly? I have to tell my other patients!". Naturally, I candidly said, "Mainly whole foods like fruits and vegetables, water fasting and resistance training". She immediately rebutted and told me I had to "watch my protein intake". Her demeanor instantly changed as if I had done something wrong.
Having my own monolog: "Didn't she just tell me I had optimal blood work and was surprised by how quickly I healed myself??" Can you feel my eyes rolling ya'll?
From my personal experience, when you heal yourself naturally it tends to be looked at as 'radical', 'risky', 'foolish', or dare I say a 'fad'. People are so conditioned to believe anything a doctor's office tells them. No one bothers to question if there is a better way or if you REALLY need those prescriptions. I am in no way bashing doctors! I acknowledge, to have the title of 'Doctor' it comes with a certain level of respect and authority. They undoubtably worked very hard to be established. With big pharma breathing down their necks and the insurance companies driving them crazy... it's hard on those guys!
We need to speak up though. Ask questions! Typically, they don't really like that but we only have one body. In the end, our health is our responsibility. When you leave that in someone else's hands trusting them blindly, you open yourself up to outcomes that may not be in your best interest.
Had I followed every treatment plan, I would have numerous MONTHLY prescriptions, back injections, unnecessary surgeries and so on. So, to make my life easier I simply stopped going to seek out care for my general health. Against the grain. Hey, if I break my arm then definitely. There is no amount of milk thistle or tea that will heal that! Modern medicine does have its place!
Looking at it from a big picture, I don't eat the standard American diet. I refuse to go to the doctor for every little hiccup. I try everything in my power to heal myself naturally before seeking other means. The body is so powerful, smart and without a doubt has multifaceted self-healing capabilities. We don't give our bodies enough credit.
If what I do is unconventional, but leads to a healthier me... Guess I'll have to be against the grain for the rest of my life.
